Words from Dr. James Maddison about the course: I was recently in a meeting as a consultant for a nonprofit that was going through a difficult time. The board president found herself in the difficult position of having to terminate one executive director, then manage the organization while searching for a new executive director. She looked at me and said, “I did the best I could, but I had no idea what I was doing.” This sentiment has been shared with me by chief executives of very large companies interested in starting nonprofit organizations; new chief executives of nonprofit organizations; and, many others who believe very strongly in a cause, but simply don’t know what they don’t know about nonprofit organizations. I have also found those among us interested in nonprofit work to be very self-motivated people who learn quickly and can solve problems. Those are the conversations, experiences and people I had in mind when I designed this course as a broad overview of many important aspects of nonprofit management and fundraising. The people who will benefit most from this course will dig deeper into what they don’t know if they just knew what they don’t know. I have learned a lot through my success, more from my mistakes. I have over 20 years of experience in nonprofit management, grant writing and fundraising. I have worked for institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, and K-12 school districts as a consultant, employee and volunteer. I have secured ~$35MM grants from federal, state, and local government agencies, foundations and corporations, and experience with many different fundraising strategies. I have managed and evaluated grant-funded projects, and incorporated two nonprofit organizations that are thriving. Most important, I have made a difference in the world because of my ability to generate revenue to support the mission and important work of nonprofit organizations. Thank you, and I hope you join me for this comprehensive and practical course.
